Description of the MST-SBH(AIR-D) Air-Driven Sanding Belt Holder for Lathes

The PRISMONT MST-SBH(AIR-D) Air-Driven Sanding Belt Holder for Lathes is designed to perform safer, efficient and precise finishing operations directly on rotating workpieces, without direct hand contact with the workpiece. It holds and drives sanding belts for various sanding, polishing and deburring applications on metal, alloys or wood, on both conventional and CNC lathes.

Mounted directly to the lathe's existing tool post, the MST-SBH(AIR-D) provides precise and stable positioning of the sanding belt against the rotating workpiece. Its compressed-air drive continuously drives the belt, eliminating manual belt rotation and reducing the amount of handling required during finishing operations. This configuration promotes a controlled, uniform finish and greater consistency from one workpiece to the next.

Designed to integrate with existing turning equipment, the MST-SBH(AIR-D) does not require the purchase of a separate finishing machine. It is particularly well suited for finishing operations after turning, light deburring, surface preparation before assembly or treatment, as well as repetitive sanding and polishing operations. Its design promotes repeatable results for both one-off production and small production runs. The tool's design provides:

  • Easy adjustment to different workpiece diameters with 3 opening positions
  • Quick sanding belt changes for increased productivity and easier transitions between operations
  • Direct installation on the existing tool post of conventional and CNC lathes
  • Use with sanding belts or felt belts, depending on the application and desired finish
  • A choice of several tool sizes to accommodate different workpiece dimensions and turning conditions

The MST-SBH(AIR-D) replaces manual hand-held sanding with a safer, hands-free solution, reducing risks associated with working close to tool posts and rotating workpieces. It also eliminates the hazards associated with improvised tool holders while promoting a more uniform, controlled and consistent finish.

The tool is designed in accordance with applicable international standards for machine tools and industrial turning operations, supporting compliance with recognized industry standards worldwide.

Each unit comes with three sanding belts included, allowing you to put the tool into service right away.

Why Replace Manual Sanding on a Lathe?

In many machine shops, sanding and polishing operations are still performed manually by holding an abrasive directly against a rotating workpiece. This method can be difficult to control and may produce variations in finish from one operator to another. It also places the operator's hands close to the workpiece and tool post, increasing the risk of snagging, entanglement or injury.

The MST-SBH(AIR-D) replaces this method with a hands-free solution mounted directly to the lathe tool post. The sanding belt is held by the device and driven by a compressed-air motor, eliminating the need to hold or manually rotate the abrasive during the operation.

This design reduces handling near rotating workpieces and also eliminates the hazards associated with improvised tool holders, while promoting more stable and controlled finishing operations.

What Are the Benefits of Using the PRISMONT Air-Driven Sanding Belt Holder for Lathes?

The MST-SBH(AIR-D) combines the advantages of a hands-free sanding solution with a motorized sanding belt drive, making lathe finishing operations easier while improving speed, consistency and safety.

Improved Safety

The MST-SBH(AIR-D) allows sanding and polishing operations to be performed without direct hand contact with the rotating workpiece. This hands-free approach helps reduce the risks associated with manual finishing operations on a lathe.

Increased Productivity

The compressed-air drive powers the sanding belt without manual rotation, allowing finishing operations to be performed faster and with less operator handling.

Consistent, Controlled Finish

The sanding belt's consistent movement and stable positioning against the workpiece promote a uniform, consistent and repeatable finish during turning operations, which is particularly beneficial for repetitive or production work.

Easier Operation and Time Savings

The pneumatic drive eliminates the need to rotate the sanding belt manually, reducing operator intervention near the rotating workpiece and simplifying finishing operations. The pneumatic motor also speeds up finishing operations and reduces the time required to achieve the desired finish.

Reduced Operator Fatigue

The motorized belt reduces the handling and physical effort associated with sanding and polishing operations, particularly during repetitive or prolonged work.

Versatility

Compatible with various sanding belts and felt belts from the MST-SBH product line, the tool makes it easy to select the appropriate abrasive for the operation and desired finish.
